There is a lot going on in this movie but it all just seemed kind of pointless and dull to me. Every now and then there would be a good scene or piece of dialogue but for the most part I felt myself getting bored and reaching for my phone to play Cribbage. I guess what I didn’t like most is that it all felt like a big filler episode instead of an action packed character driven story arc.
Action, good Fx and a “not-completely-absurd” story. The actors perform well and you can identify them very well with their characters … but it is all old and without imagination.

I suppose nobody was expecting anything else, though …
This is another one of those movies that you watch primarily for the special effects with you favourite super heroes slugging it out. It is a classical Hollywood product where the story is mostly there just as a vehicle for allowing the special effects team to do their business. As such it is a success.

The movie starts of with a display of action and the afore mentioned special effects with an attack by the Avengers on a bad guy stronghold. Not surprisingly the events sows the seeds for things to come.

The movie starts off with quite an interesting story idea with the activation of Ultron. However, once he materializes as a physical entity, it became a bit of seen that, been there and done that. Ultron just turns into yet another “standard” comic book villain a’ la Megatron running around trying to look intimidating while implementing his diabolical scheme. Okay, there was a bit of originality here and there but with the good start I kind of expected a wee bit more.

Having said that, the movie does indeed fulfil its purpose of showing off a bunch of super heroes slugging it out in a flurry of special effects and, although the story idea was perhaps not used as intelligently as I had hoped, it is not bad (for this kind of movie of course) and hangs together pretty okay. Sure, it is somewhat contrived and the means by which Ultron tries to exterminate humanity is overly complicated but it is still a decent story.

Overall the movie was entertaining and provided the necessary special effects and super hero fix for those who are inclined to enjoy those kind of movies. I certainly am and, not surprisingly, the kids liked it as well.
**A long form review originally posted in 2015:**

I’ve just returned from two back-to-back viewings of _Avengers: Age of Ultron_, and I do not regret one bit going in for that second helping.

I lost my steam on the _Age of Ultron_ wagon at a very inopportune moment. About three days before it came out. I was so heavily anticipating it for such a long time, that I was actually much more excited to see this movie when it was still two months away than I was waiting in line to get into the cinema it was playing at. The combination of the market-saturation and the fact that the _Ultron _hype-train has been running for literally years, with a first trailer dropping seven months before the damn thing came out, meant I got weary of the thing just a fraction too soon. But I’m a sucker for the MCU, and there was no way I was missing the sequel to my favourite superhero movie of all time.

I won’t harp on too much, because I don’t want to spoil anything (especially given that the movie isn’t even out in most parts of the world), I will put out a spoilertalk on this blog at some point down the line, but for now just let me leave you with a couple of quick thoughts.

_Age of Ultron_ is not the best film of all time. It’s not the best superhero film of all time, it’s not even the best MCU film. Honestly, I personally feel it’s not even the best MCU Phase 2 film. But it is still good. And that’s what’s important here. But what do I mean by that?

Well, for starters, in and of itself, I loved it, a breach past an 80% approval rating from me is no small thing. The things we enjoyed from the first _Avengers_are here. The mesmerising action spectacles of course, but I more mean the character moments we got between the Avengers themselves, that was my favourite part of the first film and we get it here again in spades.

Every new thing Joss has added to the plate works splendidly as well, real Hawkeye story, new heroes, a new villain, an updated world, all of these things are big ticks in lots of boxes.

So if everything from _The Avengers_ works and everything they’ve added works great too, why is _Age of Ultron_ not a perfect film? For spoiler-free purposes I will not go into detail, but that’s okay because the answer is quite simple: Everything in _Age of Ultron_ is great. It’s what’s not in _Age of Ultron_ that’s the problem.

Joss Whedon said that the film had to be cut by nearly an hour. That way you get more showings in, and that means more money. Now I’m not saying we need every minute of that hour back, but what we ended up being left with, was just enough for _Age of Ultron_ to be the _Thor: The Dark World_ of the _Avengers _franchise (it was a far superior film to _Dark World_, but hear me out). _Age of Ultron_ is little more than a holding pattern. The set-ups for future films take up too much time for the story to bear the weight of some actual story, but everything that occurs in the film itself somehow also has virtually no consequence on world it is a part of. I can’t say it more plainly than that: It’s a holding pattern. It introduces some stuff, but it doesn’t stand alone the first film did. It’s not such a big deal when the solo-movies do that (like the aforementioned _Dark World_) because we have _The Avengers_ films for those to pay off in. But when an _Avengers_ entry is just more of the same, I can’t fully get behind it.

That all said, _Age of Ultron_ is of course a lot of fun. A huge amount of fun, I can’t state that enough. And there’s literally nothing more important something in the entertainment industry can be. These are just the things holding it back from taking it up to the next level (or if I’m being completely honest, even taking it to the level the first film was at).

The fact that Joss Whedon was able to salvage some sort of coherent film out of all he was forced to cram into a single movie is quite commendable. But the sad fact is that Avengers: Age of Ultron is really just a run of the mill “bad guy wants to destroy the world for reasons” actioner that we’ve seen done better many times before.

Don’t get me wrong. The movie’s fun. The dialogue is frequently clever and humourous. And I really appreciated the quiet bits of storytelling that Whedon was able to sneak in. It’s just that at the end of the day, the villain is weak sauce, there’s way too much set up for other movies, and if I’m criticizing Man of Steel for having excessive destruction, I can’t give Avengers a pass since they needlessly blow up not one, not two, but three cities. Pretty sure many insurance agencies went bankrupt paying out all the victims.
Movie was great but felt like there was just too much action and fighting. The creativity of the choreography gets lost in the whirlwind of action and this I noticed most in Captain America’s scenes. He does like a hundred different awesome things with his shield, but you don’t have time to really take it in because you’re already looking at Iron Man blasting 20 Ultron-bots to bits.
This is the movie where Captain America became my favorite Avenger. Sure he doesn’t have monstrous abilities like Iron Man and Hulk, but to be holding his own on the same ground as them is just a testament to how great of a hero he truly is.
It has become a well-known fact that coming out with a sequel that’s better than, if not on par with, the first one is an insane task. But kudos to Marvel for staying true to their colors with this sequel.
I expected more from Quicksilver. He would’ve been a great addition to the Avengers.
The thing that puzzles me is that in this film, Vision is presented to be a powerful hero, having the mind stone and all. But on the next films, he’s become more of like a side character that just wasn’t relevant anymore except for that little piece of stone on his forehead. Shame.
I’m glad to see that they found another role for Hawkeye other than being that one guy who seemed to be trying hard to keep up with the other more powerful heroes on the team. Now he’s more of like the thing that keeps the team together and it suits his character well.

Avengers: Age of Ultron
I liked plenty of the stuff in it but it was pretty much the same as the first movie. Still a good watch though if you’re not looking for anything serious.
The humor in this movie was not as witty as the first one. It felt too childish and cheesy.
Still good, clean Avengers fun though a bit messier. The first one was still better.
With the vast array of heroes and their own personal character stories, you can expect how much of a challenge it is to bring together all these superheroes and have them work on a single mission on a single timeline. It’s not easy, experts.
I confirmed in this movie that what’s really making these films successful is the chemistry that the actors have. You can really see that everyone’s doing their best.
Strong film from beginning to end. Has just enough humor, angst, and drama to make it a film worthy to be called a sequel.
If you’re a fan of action, suspense, and awe worthy moments, then this movie is the right fit for you! Overall outstanding performance by everyone both on and off screen.
Despite the challenge of having to top their first Avengers film, Marvel did beautifully and the result was amazing. I hope to see more films like this in the future.

“To me, _La La Land_ is like religion. I see the appeal, and I would never take it away from anyone. But I would also never stand in line for it.”
– Jeff WInger, probably.

_Final rating:★★½ – Not quite for me, but I definitely get the appeal._
A very special, memorable film that will be iconic in the years to come.
This is definitely not a movie that I would have chosen to watch all by myself which perhaps explain why I thought it was just surprisingly okay to watch. However my girlfriend absolutely wanted to watch it so I got it. As it turned out my girlfriend had only gone by the number of Oscars and not really looked up what kind of movie it actually was so in the end I was enjoying the movie a lot more than she did.

This movie is pretty much a quite classical Hollywood musical with a non too original story, nice music and dancing. In addition the cinematography is simply excellent. This is the strong point of this movie. The rest of the movie is of lesser interest to me but the cinematography is really, really good. The scene, pictured on the movie poster, were Mia and Sebastian dances and everything in the scene are dark blue tones except Mia’s bright yellow dress is so simple and yet so beautiful.

Everything else about this movie is…okay. Okay acting, okay story etc. As I wrote before this is really not my kind of movie so forgive me for not being overly enthusiastic. I am sure those into these kind of movies cannot understand how anyone can give it less than a full set of stars but hey, different tastes and all that.

I cannot make up my mind about ending. On one hand I am a sucker for happy endings which this one falls a wee bit short on. On the other hand I have to commend the writer/director for not taking the path of least resistance and instead putting together something a wee bit different.

I did feel that a part of the movie was missing though. I would have liked to see the parts where Mia and Sebastian actually fulfilled their respective dreams. Jumping fast forward to the ending like the movie did felt a bit like they either ran out of money or they manage to misplace half the story!

Anyway, I enjoyed the movie more than I thought I would.
**They’d crossed each others life while chasing their dreams.**

I am not a big fan of modern musical films. So I was not expecting it to be a great or worst. The film opened with a song that I was not happy, because I did not like the verse or the music. And again to say, the modern timeline does not suit for the musical theme, unless it is a fantasy or an Indian film.

The best part of the film was, those song fades away as the film progresses. But I kind of liked the drama/story part and the climax track with the quick flashback (kind of). Till that scene I was considering it an average film, but that one scene changed my stance. So, now I think it is a good film, but winning 6 Oscars, I don’t know it deserved that.

Yes, the director is known for making music and musical film, but he has not made many. He’s young and so his career. Yep, I loved ‘Whiplash’. One of my all time favourite. If that film had won 10 Oscars, I would have not surprised at all. After that flick, the people were anticipating, to exceed that success in this film. As it was received, no doubt for those people it was a different flick, but not for me. Especially if you watch lots of Indian films. By the way the film characters were nice, and so the story, but not the songs.

Gosling and Stone were performed well. The chemistry between them was great. The narration was going decently until the end, which reminded me ‘Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya’ ending that I was not happy about, yet something different than usual. Sometimes I am okay with cliché than this kind of conclusion, just to bring a change in storytelling. Overall an enjoyable film, most people would love it. Some like me would say it is a decent flick, but there’s always a few who would never favour it. Yet worth a watch.

_7/10_
Undeniably well put together, and entertaining, even if it certainly chooses style over substance.

‘La La Land’ is an absolutely gorgeous-looking film, from the costumes to the cinematography to the choreography. The musical numbers are pleasant too. It is a little light on story, not that it isn’t entertaining – it is. They were, evidently to me, going for an artsy film and they nailed that. I just personally wanted more depth to the plot, rather than a song every few minutes.

Ryan Gosling is probably one of my favourite actors around right now, in the argument at least, and he is very good here. So is Emma Stone, who is arguably the film’s standout. I wanted to watch more of Stone’s work even before this, so I knew – along with Gosling – I was going to enjoy the cast. They work excellently as a duo. Elsewhere, John Legend’s role is a tad out of place, even if it’s good to see him.

4*. It might make for lame viewing if you absolutely do not like musicals, but otherwise it’s 100% worth a watch – even for someone with a mild taste for musicals, like me.

Los Angeles is an easy city to deeply love and deeply hate, and it is impossible to describe that to someone who has never lived there. The closest a non-resident can come to gaining an understanding of that sensation is by watching Damien Chazelle’s _La La Land_. On the one hand, there are the warm, sun-kissed beaches, the millionaires, and the secluded canyons of the San Gabriel mountains. It’s the promised land of golden dreams for actors, musicians, and writers, where success is always right around the corner. On the other hand, you’ll find smog, traffic, and abject failure. Los Angeles, with all its promises, is a pendulum that swings widely.

Leaving ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’, I never felt like they managed to save the franchise, nor overwhelmingly glad this movie exists. It’s an adequate addition in a messy franchise that never reaches the heights of the first two films but is just above the three films before it, and because of this a lot of people will like it much more than they should. It’s not the ‘Halloween’ or even the ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ of the ‘Terminator’ franchise; it’s a fine follow up, and sadly nothing more.

If you enjoy reading my Spoiler-Free reviews, please follow my blog 🙂

When it comes to the Terminator franchise, I share the same opinion as most people. The 1984’s original became a cult classic, and it’s one of the most influential sci-fi/action films of all-time. Terminator 2: Judgment Day is one of the (very) few sequels to such a beloved movie that actually improves on its predecessor, standing as the number one film of the saga, quality- and entertainment-wise. James Cameron left the franchise, and suddenly it all went down the sewer. While Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines is still tolerable, Salvation is absolutely terrible, and the reboot, Genisys, failed to change the saga’s history compellingly. So, obviously, even with the return of Cameron to the production team, my expectations were moderately low.

That said, Dark Fate is the best Terminator installment since T2 … which is not saying much. The last two flicks have great casts (from Christian Bale to Emilia Clarke), but their scripts are baffling bad. This time around, the cast has amazing chemistry, and their characters have better dialogue, but it comes at a cost. The last three movies possess stories that are not as captivating or entertaining (or even rational) as the first two films. Dark Fate has a much better screenplay, but again it comes at a cost. What cost is this? Basically, it repeats the exact same bits as The Terminator.

An extremely thin line exists between paying homage to a movie and blatantly copying it. Tim Miller’s team of screenwriters walk that line, stumbling to both sides several times along the way. Some scenes are indeed wonderful nods to the saga’s first two installments, but a lot of other moments (too many, to be honest) are pretty much a copy-paste version of a significant plot point or character development arc from one of those films. In case you’re wondering, this is the reason behind some of the “hate” from both critics and fans all over the world. Nowadays, people are harsher with this sort of homages, and the previously mentioned line is getting thinner and thinner.

Another reason for the divisive opinions is the opening sequence. Don’t worry, I won’t spoil. They simply make a sudden and surprising narrative decision that takes some of T2’s emotional impact, at least without first clarifying why they made such a call. Therefore, I gave the movie a chance to develop its idea, but it doesn’t. It just goes with it, and it never returns to this initial moment. Having this in mind, I understand if people instantly decided to hate the film based on just that very first scene…. Because it really doesn’t have any justification besides “well, we need a story”.

Dark Fate’s screenplay is emotionally resonant, and it’s also packed with (mostly) well-directed action sequences, but it resembles the 1984’s original plot too much. There’s even a direct line from Sarah Connor saying that a particular character is the equivalent of her son, John. This unnecessary and lazy exposition is surprisingly not as used as I expected it to be, but when it occurs, it’s like they chose the lamest, silliest, worse possible moments to place it. However, I can’t deny I actually had fun with the movie.

With a much better script than the last films, the cast was able to not only shine in a few scenes, but their incredible chemistry allowed for outstanding moments. Seeing Linda Hamilton portray Sarah Connor once again is a delight to my eyes, and Arnold Schwarzenegger is an awesome badass with hilarious lines. These two are phenomenal! Nevertheless, Mackenzie Davis steals the show as the enhanced soldier, Grace, especially regarding the action scenes. I don’t think Natalia Reyes offered what her character needed since she’s the protagonist, after all, but she’s able to stand her ground. I did enjoy Gabriel Luna take on the Terminator Rev-9, but I wish he had a little bit of more screentime besides the action.

Tim Miller brings his talented directing chops from Deadpool and applies his action techniques to deliver a lot of entertaining sequences. The VFX team provides with some impeccable CGI, but there are a couple of shots concerning a few speed bursts that should have received better treatment.

All in all, Terminator: Dark Fate is the best Terminator installment since Judgment Day, but it still doesn’t even reach the latter’s heels. It boasts a fantastic cast, with Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger returning to their respective iconic roles, but Mackenzie Davis outshines both with some badass moments and great acting. Natalia Reyes, as the protagonist, is disappointingly fine. Despite the action being well-directed and the screenplay being well-written, it all comes at the cost of essentially replicating the 1984 original’s plot. Some homages are notable, but it’s so identical story-wise that it takes away any sort of surprise, severely lacking creativity. In addition to this, it makes a narrative decision in the opening sequence that removes some of T2’s emotional impact, damaging the saga’s best movie and one of the greatest sci-fi/action films of all-time. I don’t exactly recommend it, but if you’re a fan of the franchise, go see it but with moderate expectations.

Rating: C
Pretty good (second) reboot for this long-running franchise with some decent action, respectable enough visual effects (some parts looked off, though) and I did genuinely liked the two new cast members while Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger were fine.

That being said, it’s also pretty clear this is not a franchise that needed to have gone beyond the two movies (and I might give leniency to “The Sara Connor Chronicles”). The saving grace is that on the technical front, it was an entertaining popcorn flick but like Genysis (which I also liked tbh), not really sure when I would revisit. **3.5/5**
“For John.”

‘Dark Fate’ was meh. I mean it’s basically the Force Awakens of the franchise just more cash grab. Like…how many times can they keep alternating T1 & T2, and yet it’s astounding that it never ruins the legacy of the series.

Despite all that, it’s the third best in the series. At least this movie knows that Terminator is not for kids! I had some engagement in the movie, even through the reason being that it follows a familiar plot line.

Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger are both the stand outs. Hamilton playing a cranky bad-ass and Arnold playing an involved machine that has a life of his own. Mackenzie Davis was surprisingly not as annoying as I thought she will be just from the marketing alone. Her character was straight forward in terms of motivation and can take damage.

Tim Miller really knows how to direct action scenes effectively and in this movie he delivers some grand action set pieces. However, after seeing the movie a few days ago, only a small selection stick to memory.

Gabriel Luna did a decent job playing the new advance Terminator. They took the “Robert Patrick” approach with picking an ordinary looking guy and making him into the biggest threat of humanity. Although it was a bit hard for me to feel threaten by him as throughout the movie he seemed easily out match by pretty much everyone.

I didn’t really buy into Dani played by Natalia Reyes as the main “saviour of the future”, mainly because of her stiff acting and everytime she holds a gun it’s twice her size.

The visual effects at times looked pretty OK, but the rest looked really bad. It really doesn’t help when there’s close ups on the effects where you can see the fakeness. At times the movie was a little too dark and I don’t mean in tone, just whenever it’s night time.

Overall rating: Not as great as T1 & T2, but nothing will without James Cameron magic touch.
Let it never be said that they aren’t trying. Everybody’s trying, even the cast, and there was a genuine question mark over the head of that one going in, but people have been trying to make a great _Terminator_ sequel for a very long time, and not a one of them has succeeded at the job since before I was even born, so maybe what we really need, is for the film industry to just stop trying for a little while. Not stop trying to make good movies, just stop trying to make Terminator movies. Like, at all.

_Final rating:★★½ – Had a lot that appealed to me, didn’t quite work as a whole._
Great watch, would watch again, and do recommend.

First, time travel is the worst, but it’s what allows the premise.

I don’t like divergent timelines, but it allows for some interesting scenarios, so when an android that never would have been created kills someone that would had stopped it from existing had it not been erased from existence, I’m a little interested.

The other big difference, and I’m not really opposed, is that they turned this into a women’s empowerment movie when it could have just been bad ass women on screen and it wouldn’t have slapped the audience so hard. Plus there is a weird parallel there where they still need a “big strong man” to save them, but it’s a machines, so the only man a woman really needs is a “machine”? I don’t know, I really liked the movie, and I sure wouldn’t change the cast, just maybe point it in a more linear direction than the “protect the womb” mislead they threw in to throw shade at the original.

Linda Hamilton is just as bad ass as ever, and Arnold Schwarzenegger is really keeping up too. I love Mackenzie Davis in this: she plays a no-nonsense, dedicated soldier so well.

Unfortunately Natalia Reyes just doesn’t sell the character she’s supposed to be to me, and Gabriel Luna doesn’t quite pop for some reason. Granted the T-1000 has some surprise and charm to it that the REV-9 doesn’t quite have just in the nature of it.

I will say the REV-9 does bring a very specific flavor to the action, being 1, 1.5, or even 2 separate characters really has a lot of potential to it, and I do want to see a different story that does intelligence work with a similar concept, but the action this gives is pretty sweet.

And that’s where it is special, mostly in the nano-bot effects. Most of the rest of the action is pretty standard, but good, and Mackenzie Davis does such a great job playing up being super powered against such a crazy machine. I do how she joins the Marvel Universe.

Fans of the Terminator franchise, androids, action should like this, though I’ll admit it’s not a return for formula, but it better than some of the other movies in the franchise.
It has its fair share of time travel nonsense and weird timeline stuff, but it’s still **so much better than Terminator Genisys**. The cast is pretty good and the action is great to watch. If this is the last Terminator movie, at least it ends on a decent note.
Terrible film… the use of CGI was very imaginative (if repetitive) but the acting was wooden and the storyline (?) was pathetic. Better than Hellboy 3 – but a damn close thing…
