West Side story: Gritty morality tale with an emotional punch. 85%

Not having seen the stage production of “West Side story” or its first film version, which I understand is regarded as a classic, I really don’t have a point of comparison for this new film version of the long-running musical theatre staple. Of course, with the US being so effective at exporting its pop culture around the world, I was aware of songs and scenes from the original Hollywood film, which had positive associations for me, even though I live in Australia.

The story was inspired by a much earlier tale, which I won’t mention here because…spoilers. In any case, the second film version (presumably…at least as far as US film versions go) of this story is set in a slum in New York in the 1950s (the “West Side” of the title). The setting is very nicely established, with an opening shot of some partially destroyed buildings which a sign states are being demolished to make way for the gentrification of the area. The flats in the high-rise buildings nearby have a suitably “slummy” look without the aesthetic being overdone. From out of this no man’s land emerges what turns out be a gang of Anglo background, known as “The Jets”. You can tell that they they are bad because they soon terrorise the neighbourhood with dancing and singing, with no one daring to stop them. It has to be said, at this point, the realisation of a musical in the modern era hasn’t lost my interest. Fit young blokes dancing and singing and clicking their fingers in time in the streets of a big city doesn’t seem all that ridiculous now.

We soon learn that The Jets have a rival group which they want to remove from ‘their turf’, a gang known as “The Sharks”, which are of Puerto Rican ethnicity. The basis of The Jets’ animosity to The Sharks is basically an issue of race (and that is also the basis of the police department’s animosity towards The Sharks as well). The Sharks do not ‘belong’ in the US and they should ‘go back to where they came from’. The first encounter we see between these two rival gangs is a violent one and it’s pretty clear that things will escalate from here between them.

If you’re thinking that nothing thrown into this tinderbox could make it any more flammable, well…enter Tony (played by Ansel Elgort) and Maria (Rachel Zegler). Tony is the co-founder of The Jets but after a stint in prison for a shocking beating he gave to an Eyptian man, he is trying to be a better person, now holding down a steady job and no longer involved in his gang’s activities. Maria is the sister of Bernardo (David Alvarez), a man who is trying to fight his way out of the slum (literally). Bernardo has a chip on his shoulder about the Anglos, who make life difficult for his community. He plays the father-figure at the flat that he shares with his girlfriend and Maria. The prospect of Maria dating a “gringo” is unacceptable to him, as we later find out when…Tony and Maria meet at a dance event and…instantly fall in love. He is also the leader of The Sharks.

That moment when Tony and Maria fall in love at first sight is very sweetly done. Maria, as played by Zegler, seems like an old-fashioned Disney princess at first, being very timid but then being quite forward…perhaps like a (modern day?) Disney princess? (Since I’m not well-versed in Disney films about princesses, I’ll have to defer to the judgement of people more informed than me on this subject.) The lyric from the song “Hurts so good” by John Cougar comes to mind about her: “you ain’t as green as you are young”. Zegler/Maria is very attractive in a winsome way. Director Steven Spielberg has really captured a winning performance from her. It occurred to me after writing down my initial thoughts on this film that Zegler would be a worthy nominee for “Best actress” at awards time. Even though I haven’t really seen many ‘quality’ films this year, I think I know a quality performance when I see one and I don’t think that a best actress award for her would be undeserved.

If you think that Maria couldn’t be any more adorable, well, you should hear her sing. She has a lovely voice, in my view. To me, she’s the standout voice of the musical. Elgort tends towards falsetto at times. On the subject of the music, I’d say that I’m pretty sure that if you just wanted to listen to the musical on CD or whatever, then there would be better versions of that from previous productions of this story, whether on stage or screen. By that I mean perhaps the music elsewhere is bolder, brassier or arranged more pleasingly (to my ears, at least) and that would apply to the vocal performances as well. However, since I haven’t heard other versions, I can’t recommend one for you.

It also later occurred to me how similar Tony and Bernardo are (which I’ve retrospectively alluded to in my earlier comments about how both of them plan to get out of the slum). Another point of comparison with Bernardo would be The Jets’ new leader, “Riff” (Mike Faist). They both mirror each other as far as attitudes to “the other” goes.

In any case, just when Tony thought he was out, Riff pulls him back in again, as far as gang activities go.

I liked this film and had moments of recognition with it, with regards to clicking fingers and many songs. One event which did jar with me was how Maria reacted to Tony when she heard some fateful news about him. It just didn’t ring true to me. Maybe with a greater passage of time it could have worked. Later, when the police officer goes over the whole timeline, the short duration was a shock too.

The film was on track for a score of 80% from me but since the drama near the end of the film elicited emotion from me, I added another 5% to my score to reflect that.

Random notes:

*Is the ending different to previous versions of this story? If it is, you can either read it as a return to sanity as far as character motivation goes or as a Steven Spielberg tendency.

*There is some realism to the violence, so not suitable for very young children, I don’t think.

*I couldn’t quite tell if there was some strong swearing at times or if it was toned down.

*Curios: 5c for a Milky Way chocolate bar, $15 for a fashionable store scarf, I think.
Good production. I liked the performers, except Ansel Elgort as the lead male, Tony, who I found to be uninteresting. I never got into the story or the songs.

A couple of other thoughts:

* Carefully choreographed Broadway-style dance routines severely diminish the menace of street gangs.
* Love at first sight is a myth and is a very bad reason to kill or be killed. (Intense attraction, curiosity, and lust at first sight, sure, but love takes longer.)
Full review: https://www.tinakakadelis.com/beyond-the-cinerama-dome/2021/12/28/it-all-begins-tonight-west-side-story-review

This film is a still (sadly) all-too-relevant story about how hatred infiltrates communities and the struggle to find a place to belong. West Side Story is about creating a home, however, you choose to define the word. Unfortunately, the miscasting of Tony brings down what could have been a near-perfect movie. His role is simply too large to be ignored and impossible to compare to his co-stars’ formidable, sublime performances.

While ‘The Gentlemen’ is a big step forward from Ritchie’s latest films, it’s not the return to form fans may be hoping for. That said, there is still fun to be had here, and it may work better at home than a cinematic experience.

**_Nothing too unexpected here, but it’s funny and hugely entertaining_**

>_You don’t crucify people! Not on Good Friday!_

– Harold Shand; _The Long Good Friday_ (1980)

The Gentlemen is a return to the London gangster milieu where writer/director Guy Ritchie first made his name with films such as _Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels_ (1998) and _snatch._ (2000). His first foray into this territory since the disappointing _RocknRolla_ (2008), _The Gentlemen_ comes at the end of over a decade making big-budget studio-backed crimes against cinema such as _Sherlock Holmes_ (2009), _Sherlo__ck Holmes: A Game of Shadows_ (2011), _The Man from U.N.C.L.E_. (2015), _King Arthur: Legend of the Sword_ (2017), and _Aladdin_ (2019). Granted, the film seems stuck in the last decade in more ways than one, it’s highly questionable that the only gay character is a slimy man-whore into S&M, its token female character barely even manages to rise to the level of tokenism, and Ritchie does absolutely nothing new here – if you’ve seen _Lock, Stock_ or _snatch._, you’ll know pretty much exactly what to expect – but _The Gentlemen_ is still hugely entertaining. Most of the jokes land, the dialogue is as sharp and expletive-laden as ever, the cast are having a ball, and the self-reflexivity, although a little forced in places, works well for the most part. And yes, the plot is as derivative as it gets, but there’s no denying Ritchie has injected real verve into what looks on paper like an inconsequential C-movie. _The Gentlemen_ definitely won’t change your life, but it will make you laugh.

The film begins as sleazy private eye Fletcher (Hugh Grant) arrives unannounced at the home of Ray (Charlie Hunnam), right-hand man to Mickey Pearson (Matthew McConaughey), a suave Oxford-educated American ex-pat who controls a huge marijuana empire in London, valued at around £400 million. Several months prior, Fletcher was hired by tabloid editor Big Dave (the great Eddie Marsen) to dig up dirt on Pearson with the aim to ruin him – Dave’s revenge for Pearson blanking him at a gala. Fletcher has written a screenplay based on his investigation (titled _Bush_) and tells Ray that unless Pearson pays him £20 million, he will hand over everything he has to Dave. Meanwhile, Pearson has decided to sell his whole operation, but when word gets out, all hell breaks loose, as the various interested parties vie for advantage. Most of the subsequent film takes the form of Fletcher narrating his exploits to Ray, explaining how he learned so much about Pearson and what he does. Along the way, we meet characters such as Rosalind (Michelle Dockery), Pearson’s ruthless and unflappable “_cockney Cleopatra_” wife, who runs a garage with an all-female staff; Berger (Jeremy Strong), Pearson’s preferred buyer; Dry Eye (Henry Golding), the ambitious but brutal scion of a Chinese syndicate, who hopes to undermine Berger; Coach (a scene-stealing Colin Farrell), who runs a boxing gym for troubled youths and who inadvertently finds himself in the middle of everything; a plethora of property-rich-but-cash-poor landed gentry who are essential to Pearson’s empire; a Russian oligarch; and a street gang called The Toddlers.

Aesthetically, _The Gentlemen_ is very much in the mould of Ritchie’s previous gangster movies. Because Fletcher frames his narration as a screenplay, it allows Ritchie to employ a multitude of self-reflexive devices – a smash cut coinciding with Fletcher asking Ray to visualise a smash cut; voiceover transitioning into spoken dialogue; on-screen captions telling us who’s who; animated maps; YouTube fight porn (don’t ask); freeze-frames; rewinds; a shot of film running through a projector etc. At one point, Fletcher is discussing the merits of anamorphic (2.39:1) over 1.78:1, and the film’s aspect ratio changes accordingly. At another, he’s arguing for the merits of 35mm celluloid over digital, saying he likes the grain of celluloid photography, and the film duly switches formats. Such playfulness means that it never for a second takes itself too seriously, with probably the most self-reflexive moment coming towards the end, when we visit Miramax’s offices in London (Miramax produced the movie), and we see a poster for Ritchie’s _The Man From U.N.C.L.E._. All of this is immensely fun, with the more you know about the mechanics of assembling a film, the more humorously
self-reflexive the film becomes – Fletcher even acknowledges his own role as an unreliable narrator, and a discussion of the importance of sound leads to his dismissal of Francis Ford Coppola’s _The Conversation_ (1974) as “_a bit boring._”

In terms of themes, the most obvious is something Ritchie has examined before – the idea that the economic divide between gangsters and aristocrats masks their practical similarities. Pearson straddles this divide; he’s a gangster, but so too is he an aristocrat (in all but name), and the smooth running of his business depends on both classes – the aristocrats who he needs to grow his product (for reasons that constitute a bit of a spoiler, so I’m not going to get into it) and the gangsters who distribute that product. The clash between the pompous insularity of the English upper class and the perceived uncouthness of the lower class has been done to death in both literature (Emily Brontë’s _Wuthering Heights_ (1847) springs to mind) and film (Nicolas Roeg and Donald Cammell’s _Performance_ (1970), for example), and although Ritchie doesn’t say anything even remotely new about it, it still forms an interesting textural background – gentrification is ever present; there are ironic references to the posh areas of Croydon; Ray, a working-class Newcastle native, is a cleanliness freak who eats wagyu steak and lives in a mansion, and when he’s dispatched on a mission to an uncivilised working-class area, he explains he “_just hates them junkies_,” seeing them as very much his social inferiors.

One of the most central scenes sees a group of obnoxious privileged teens holed up in a council flat, whilst on the street below, a gang of machete-wielding delinquents terrorise the neighbourhood. As Ray and his men clash with the gang, there’s a real sense of old vs. new – traditional gangsters fighting it out with internet-savvy hoodlums who don’t give a damn about tradition or respect. There are a lot of laughs to be had with these issues, such as Ray and Coach having problems pronouncing the name Phuc, or Coach debating with one of his boxers whether it’s racist to call someone “_a black c**t_”, even though they are black and they are a c**t. And again, none of this is presented as even remotely serious.

The biggest problems with the film are probably its lack of depth, and the familiarity of the presentation, characters, and _milieu_ – there’s nothing here you haven’t seen in previous Ritchie films. And as you would expect, there isn’t much in the way of emotional maturity or narrative complexity. It’s all very surface-level, and it makes no apologies for such.

Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed _The Gentlemen_. It’s a funny as hell caper and the actors are clearly having terrific fun. It might be formulaic and overly familiar, but it’s also immensely enjoyable.

I’ve always been a fan of Guy Ritchie’s style. While I do admit that he tends to overuse his own techniques (like he does in this movie), he always manages to bring something unique to his projects. He delivered a pretty good live-action remake of Aladdin while offering his own take (Jasmine has more compelling motivations). I surprisingly enjoyed King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword, but the ending is disappointing. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and the Sherlock Holmes films are entertaining and fun, to say the least. So, yes, I was sort of excited to watch The Gentlemen.

With such a stellar cast, how can someone not be interested in an old-fashioned crime-thriller? First of all, I want to get this out right away: it’s a movie that anyone can enjoy, sure, but for people who know how films usually work, Ritchie applies a storytelling method that’s going to make every “filmmaking nerd” lose their minds. Hugh Grant (Fletcher) is mostly the narrator of the entire story, and he’s basically interpreting a “version” of Guy Ritchie telling the story of his own “flick”.

This means Fletcher goes on and on about film specs like aspect ratios and film gauges but also helping the audience understand what’s happening, by announcing if the story is near its climax or if “the plot thickens”. It’s a captivating and funny way of using exposition without it being lazy or forced. Grant also makes sure to ask the questions the audience should be asking. This way, even people who don’t like to think when they go to the cinema (yes, they exist) will be able to follow the mystery unraveling.

Obviously, the unbelievable cast makes this movie so much fun. Matthew McConaughey is a masterful actor when it comes to carrying long dialogues. Everything he says is always engaging, either by the way he says it, his expressions, or the physical intensity he puts into his own words. Charlie Hunnam (Ray) probably delivers his most amusing performance to date. Ray is definitely going to be a fan-favorite character, and his interactions with Fletcher (with who he spends most of the runtime) are hilarious.

Henry Golding (Dry Eye), Michelle Dockery (Rosalind Pearson), and Jeremy Strong (Matthew) all give excellent performances, but Colin Farrell is the best of this group of characters as Coach. His scenes are some of the funniest sequences of the entire year so far. From his accent to the action he eventually gets into, he’s one of those characters who will leave everyone wanting more. As for the story, it’s undoubtedly one of the most complex screenplays I’ve seen in a while. Comparing with Knives Out, the narrative structure ends up being a bit similar.

Both possess tons of twists and turns that will make everyone scratch their heads for quite some time. Both show different events of the story, featuring a specific character at a particular time in a distinct manner (flashback, flashforward, simple exposition). However, The Gentlemen abuses from its own trick a bit too much, especially during the first half. Something entertaining can quickly turn into something pretty annoying if the storytelling isn’t well-balanced. Can’t have too much of anything, right?

This is my overall issue with the film. Guy Ritchie brings something cool and fresh to escape heavy exposition, but it’s still a lot of information to transmit, and it doesn’t always work smoothly. Some subplots didn’t need to go so deep, which takes time away from more emotionally investing storylines. Nevertheless, in the end, Ritchie stitches every story together seamlessly to create a very well-written flick. With so many intricate layers, it’s extremely difficult to bring it all together to make a cohesive finale, but Ritchie does it superbly.

All in all, The Gentlemen is another hit for Guy Ritchie, and it might even be his best movie yet. With one of the most complex screenplays in a while, the phenomenal cast elevates this crime-thriller into one of the best films of 2020, so far. Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, Hugh Grant, and Colin Farrell stand out, but every actor delivers excellent performances. Extremely funny and captivating storytelling through Grant’s narration, which ironic or not, it’s both the best and worst component of the movie. When used in excess, it can be a bit bothersome and lengthy, but for most of the runtime, this alternative to substantial exposition works brilliantly. Interesting characters, intriguing mystery, and hilarious bits of comedy make this feature very entertaining. Technically, great editing keeps a well-paced flow, but it’s Ritchie’s layered narrative that steals the show.

**CAN YOU SAY, ER …
” BADASS-EST ” 😅 💥❓ … THIS IS A SEMI PARODICAL TITLE .**

A “Good, Old Fashioned” **- _B I G_ -** Screen Review .

______________________________________________________

Letty Ortiz: “Hi, little Brian. I have a gift for you. Your Daddy gave me this, & now I’m going to give it to you. It’s very Special Letty takes off her necklace & puts it around Brian’s neck …it’s for protection… from what’s coming” .

______________________________________________________

First & foremost, – Not Only – is this undeniable “behemoth” of a movie, with its USD 200 Million -plus- production budget, broadly speaking, **- GENUINELY ✅ -** enjoyable; but it is -Also- “rather surprisingly”, and very reassuringly so . . . ” relatively ” . . . -very- Family Friendly, indeed. As a doting – _P a r e n t_ – , I had, to be very honest, expected -Considerably- worse; given what the ‘seemingly standard trend’ with Blockbuster-fare ( on -this- magnitude, atleast ) is, in this… ‘our pretty, darn reckless’ ..day and age .

Moreover, I just **- LOVE 👏 -** how the movie …unreservedly… -not only- “laughs out loud” – at itself – of course , but often -Also- seems like it’s having a ‘rollicking good time’ doing it. For -all- the ‘Contrarian’-reviewers on a very similar platform to this known as ‘IMDb’ that appear absolutely -Bent- on picking this fairly “lighthearted” & essentially **” PLAYFUL “** picture apart for just about ‘every conceivable reason under the sun’ : I have -just- 3 ‘Profound’ words to say to you: “Watch It Again”. Because that is -just- what I did, & I ended up enjoying it – way – more the second time around ; managing to, on the one hand, clear up -Several- of my initial doubts… & on the other ; to – truly – appreciate how ( actually ) “Un”-seriously …”F9″ really takes itself. Keep your eye out for the tiny but absolutely – hilarious❗- little “Who’s Dominic Toretto?” scene ; you’ll get a better feel for what I mean. But let me be ..”Starkly”.. clear. – In no way – is my review title meant to suggest to you, -even remotely- , that this is somehow ‘the best cinematic offering on earth’ right now, or -any- such manner of preposterous thing. The pointed – reason – , as it were, for my use of the -decidedly- ” Lively ” , Benignly Parodical, & even “mildly histrionic” , film review -Title- that you see above, is, quite simply , ‘as follows’ .

—– ” It’s a well known fact by now that the – Ever – grandiose pictures of the ‘Fast And Furious’ franchise seem to -forever- be looking to ” One Up Themselves ” , in terms of making their vehicular ( in particular ) action sequences – well and truly – ” One-Of-A-Kind ” . In keeping with this ‘practically-Sacrosanct ( 🙏 😅 )’ , time honoured tradition . . . . F9’s very accomplished ‘In-house’ writer-Director Justin Lin has ( -Yet- ) again proven that he most certainly is the very ‘living embodiment’ of this rule, by taking those wild & wacky ( bespoke ) ‘Gas-Guzzler Gymnastics’ of his all the way , you guessed it , to – Outer Space – . . . . not to mention all the -many, many- other ( almost ) as utterly, utterly, utterly ‘_Ludacris_’ stunts performed …seemingly as if… ‘by all those Mega-fancy automobiles themselves’. ( Watch the final -official- trailer for F9 , if it’s still going to be a while before said movie hits your part of the world ). So there you have it. Hence that ‘affectionate little touch’ of, well , ” Classic-hyperbole ” , in my review-Title . ” —–

And so, in closing, here are the things I consider to be the – Most – likeable, about the picture. 1 : The ever-fresh, ever-sweet rapport that ‘Dominic Toretto’ ( Vin Diesel ) has with ‘Letty Ortiz’ ( Michelle Rodriguez ). 2 : The Un -deniable ” Brilliance 🌠 ” , really , with which -Several- mind bogglingly complex, & indeed, ‘super-Protracted’ multiple vehicle chase & combat scenes were put together. 3 : -All- those “giant-Magnet special effects”, ( this is -Also- teased in the trailers, which are freely available to watch on youtube ), meticulously crafted to, frankly, “.nothing less than sheer – Perfection – ” . 4 : The film’s – Delectable – smattering of short, nonetheless utterly -Classic- ” Movie-Reincarnation sequences ” . Meaning . . . action or comedy ( or both ) ‘Re-works’ of -Well- established , ( & often beloved, even ) , ” Universally Iconic Cinematic-moments ” . . . which in the case of F9 … Un -mistakably… were sequences that hearkened -Right- back to a few ( very ) specific, timeless, & -Massively- popular scenes from A : ‘Jurrasic Park-Part One’, B : ‘Terminator Three-Rise Of The Machines’ ( **-OR-** ‘The Dark Knight’ : your prefererence, really ), & C : ‘Austin Powers-Part One’, -even- , just to name the ( Most 💙 ) notable ones. 5 : And last but by no means the least : there really – Was – a whole lot of -actually- funny stuff in F9. And I am, -of course- referring here to -Very- many moments of “Unabashedly-Dumb Frivolity” involving , ( but not limited to ) ; none other than the ” Uber-talented ” Tyrese Gibson, ( ‘Roman’ ), & his -equally- Fun partner-in-comedy, Ludacris ( ‘Tej’ ) ; with the ever charming Nathalie Emmanuel ( ‘Ramsey’ ) chiming in ‘most pleasantly’ from time to time, for good measure .

Summary : If you – Didn’t – come to F9 to see cars flying in, well, -outer space- , ( and other such ” _Colossally_ ” Zany-things ) , then you -most certainly- came to the wrong place. Translation : if you’re ( one of those ) the -‘Many, Many’- ( aforementioned ) negative-reviewers, and feel like you were ( -better- ) suited to simply watching ‘Normal’ cars just driving around, well… ‘Normally’ …& – Not – doing a multitude of “crazy & extraordinary” things ; then can I -very humbly- recommend, say, ….going & sitting down at a nearby bus-stop, & watching ‘The Street’…. – Instead – . Because, ‘for better or worse’, -this- movie does – Exactly – what it says on the tin , ” & Then Some ” . Furthermore, the two -Main- Male “Lead-pairs”, namely, A : Vin Diesel and John Cena ; and B : Vinnie Bennett and Finn Cole, ( a.k.a ‘Young Dom’, and ‘Young Jakob’ ), play – remarkably – well off one another ; whilst -All- the “Leading Ladies” plunge headfirst into this veritable, **- MINDLESS -** Fun-Fest , ” With A Vengeance ” . So it’s going to be a generous, – “Very Grateful” – , and decidedly ” pandemic-Considerate ” 7.75 Marks Out Of 10.00 from me. Well, only one thing left to say, then. **” _I G N I T I O N_ 😅❗ ” .**
After being delayed from a summer 2020 release by the Pandemic; Universal has released the latest film in the Fast and The Furious franchise to fans eager for some adrenaline-fueled summer action.

“F9 The Fast Saga” has done well in the few countries it has already been released, and has raced to a nearly $300 million total which the industry hopes is a signal that people are ready to return to cinemas in numbers again and that the film will take off when it opens in the U.S. and other markets.

The film opens with a flashback to the 1980s where young Dominic and his brother experience an event that changes their lives and drives a wedge between them. Moving forward to the present day, Dom (Vin Diesel) and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), are living in seclusion with Dom’s son.

When the crew shows up unexpectedly with a mission from Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell); who has gone missing, the crew venture out to retrieve a missing device which in turn puts them directly in the path with nefarious individuals and a ghost from Dom’s past.

As anyone who has watched any films in the series knows; the plots are often thin and a bit absurd as they serve simply as a device for the cast to assemble and chase a McGuffin to save the day. In doing so; the audience knows there will be an abundance of fists, bullets, cars, crashes, and outrageous stunts along the way.

While reality and credibility are not words associated with the franchise, the cast eagerly plays along with the absurdity, action, and mayhem and gives fans what they want. While the middle portion dragged while the audience was given more of the setup and introduced to cast members old and new; the action sequences are the over-the-top show stoppers which have become a staple of the franchise.

Director Justin Lin knows this and his return to the franchise does not attempt to invoke any new wrinkles and gives fans what they expect. The large ensemble works well with one another and John Cena is a very interesting addition to the cast.

Audiences will want to make sure to stay seated for a bonus scene that sets up the next film or spin-off very well and opens up some very interesting possibilities.

In the end “F9 The Fast Saga” gives audiences a dose of high-octane adrenaline and a return to no-brainer over the top action when it is needed the most. Check your brain at the door, strap in, and enjoy the ride.
3.5/5
This delay was worth waiting for…

First of, it was really cool how they did the flashback; looked like it was filmed in a retro camera, which made it look like it was filmed in the 1989/90s!. Clearly a nod to the first Fast & Furious film.
I mean, I was confused at first by what the flashback was telling me, but halfway through the film, it started to all make sense!

I give it 5 stars, for basically going overboard with the rocket launcher mounted on a car, the editing for the flashbacks, bringing back two of the characters from Tokyo Drift, combining cheesy humor with outstanding action, the redemption, the post credit scene featuring Jason Statham! And of course the surprising return of Han, and how he survived (the latter definitely had questions that needed answering).
Not to mention the storyline itself was brilliantly done.

“F9 takes its ridiculously absurd action sequences to intolerably nonsensical levels, all while trying to tell an overlong, messy, unimaginative story surrounding one of the most generic cliches. Justin Lin ignores the little balance that the saga still possesses in previous installments, delivering insanely dumb moments throughout entire set pieces, contrary to having a somewhat acceptable action scene with the occasional suspension of disbelief in a specific situation. Daniel Casey and Lin are also unable to create a compelling narrative around Dom’s lost brother, ultimately damaging years of character development for Vin Diesel’s role. Bringing back Han was as unnecessary as the unconvincing explanation for his return, hurting not only this movie’s pacing and extended runtime but also the emotional weight of previous films. The original cast members and the exceptional production value are enough to save this installment from being a massive disaster. If you’re able to (really) shut down your brain for over two hours, this might still be an entertaining time at the theater. However, even for fans of the Fast & Furious saga, I doubt this movie will end up as one of your favorites.”

Rating: D+
I didn’t heed everyone’s advice and decided I would view this for myself.

Yikes!! Definitely not good.

Plot holes galore, continuation errors, scene mistakes, factual errors, you name it they exist. Some things just make you scratch your head and say WTF, or smack yourself in the head because you wonder how they could be so stupid when they made this. No, I don’t make movies for a living, no I am not a paid critic, I just watch movies for fun and this was not “FUN”.

If you like action movies with bad acting then this is for you. If you have watched all the other F&F movies and think this is going to be good, then this is for you.

If you are looking a way to kill a few hours having numbed yourself then this IS for you.

You have been warned.
I watched the film, but it didn’t appeal to me as much as the prior films.
The change in theme and concept was one of the things that bothered me the most in this film.

From street racing and minor crimes, the movies evolved into an idea of saving the planet. Okay, that’s wonderful; you can save the world; however, how can someone reach space in his car and survive?
Seriously?

I don’t recall this being fast and furious. The plot was similar to earlier films and revolved around Hobbs and Shaw. The story was not exceptional in any way.

And, when it comes to action, it was unrealistic and unbelievable.
Thousands of cars followed Dom’s crew, and thousands of guys with bullets and automatic weapons fired at them, but nothing happened to them. No one was hurt in any way. Are they immortals?

I felt the absence of screenwriter Chris Morgan as the structure and storytelling were sloppier to the overall detriment of the film.
Sure no one watches FF series expecting amazing plot, but surely it is now pushing the boundaries of ridiculous. I did enjoy the previous films just as silly action flicks but this one had me sighing in disbelief midway through.
To some degree, with maybe the exception of Tokyo Drift and Fate of the Furious, I’ve enjoyed these Fast and Furious movies. Yes, they are dumb and have over-the-top action, CGI-generated, scenes yet despite that found them to be mindless entertainment with the only merit being the chemistry with the cast. However, with Fate of the Furious and the absence of Paul Walker, the series lost that aspect. Walker wasn’t a great actor but he and Diesel were great together, along with the others in the ensemble where I could overlook the stupid moments.

This ninth entry, as most sequels do, takes it to the next level of absurdity but this time I really could not care less about anything going on. The action scenes were pretty lame and even though it was a joke taking the movie into space, I didn’t think they’d actually do it… I could only shake my head at that sequence.

Then there’s the whole bringing Han back to life. They have now retconned his scene for a second time and somehow, despite this being an outlandish franchise, cheapens any character development for Deckard Shaw (his entire reason for “killing” Han was out of revenge for putting his brother in a coma, although IIRC initially Owen Shaw was thought to have been killing in Fast Five).

They try to add some BS depth with faith and, of course, FAMILY, that doesn’t land. Hell, there’s even discussion from Roman (Tyrese) about being invincible played as a joke only to come true once he and Tej go into space to stop a satellite and actually f’ing survive.

The film also is a greatest hits with the return of characters from previous entries including Helen Mirren, Lucas Black, Kurt Russell, Charlize Theron, Shea Whigham (had to look him up, he was in Furious 6), Sung Kang, Shad Moss (aka Bow Wow), etc. Plus Jason Statham makes an uncredited cameo.

Boy, yeah the Fast franchise jumped the shark a while back but this one is on the bottom of the list. I don’t know how they will right the ship with #10 (and supposedly the last) but the issue with these sequels is they have to top the previous no matter what.

Dumb is fine. Lazy not so much. **2.25/5**
The Fast and Furious franchise has, since quite a few movies back, abandoned all pretense of being anything but silly, unrealistic, action extravaganzas. That means that these movies are not to everyone’s taste (which no movies really are for that matter) but it seems a lot of those people have watched this movie anyway and then pretends to be surprised.

Those who give this movie one star ratings have obviously never seen a real one star movie and those asshats that start their review with “I left after xx minutes” are just trolls. If you have not watched the movie, all of it, don’t write a bloody “review”.

To me this movie was pretty much what I expected. Perhaps even a bit more silly and over the top than the previous ones, not that this was much of a surprise, but still more or less what I expected.

It has a half decent, quite predictable, story that’s just good enough to tie the action sequences together. I do whish stupid Hollywood writers that probably never finished basic school would stop write stories with their favorite “device yyy which can take over all electronics” bullshit in them. Apart from being total scientific nonsense it is really, really overused.

Vin Diesel is Vin Diesel. I cannot remember many, if any, movies where I have not liked his character. His team is pretty likable as well although some of their silly shenanigans and ramblings was indeed a bit tiresome from time to time.

The core of the movie is of course the action and special effects. Sure, they are incredibly over the top and for the most of the time you have to put your brain in idle when watching them but if you, like me, like special effects this is a movie for you. The silly scene where the bad guys “tank train” flipped over was a bit too much for me as well but on the whole I enjoyed the action.

I was not too thrilled with all the flashbacks but then I almost never like flashbacks and there was plenty of them in this movie.

I would have liked Chipher to have a bigger role in the movie. She is cool as well as intelligent which is not something that really could be said about Dom’s brother. The main bad guy was just a jerk and not very charismatic. Hollywood really seems to have a problem writing good bad guys lately.

Overall, this was some well spent almost two and a half hours (I watched the directors cut). I quite enjoyed this movie.
Well they did sub-title this a “saga”, but I wasn’t quite expecting something this poor. Things didn’t auger well when the cinema screen broke down and we were turfed out after thirty minutes. Next week, back for part two – complete with “an opportunity to refresh our memories” as the cinema lad put it… Sadly, though, the first half hour provides us with easily the most entertaining elements of this otherwise weak story bereft of just about everything bar some super stunts/visual effects and Charlize Theron locked up in a plastic cage. There is some effort made to create some characters, and Vin Diesel does bring a certain degree of charisma to the screen, but after an initial flurry of decent motor sport action, we drop from a great height into a family revenge/melodrama that has only one, entirely predictable, conclusion. It is a piece of harmless escapism that serves to divert us from reality for an extremely overlong 2 hrs and 20 minutes but this franchise really misses Paul Walker and although I’m sure nobody will listen, this is not much of a testament to his memory and ought to be the last unless someone is going to revamp the concept thoroughly and invest in solid stories and characters to compliment the endless, and increasingly sterile, visuals. I want one of those planes, though….
